Level Airlines Baggage Policy: Fees, Limits, and What to Expect

The answer

Level's Economy Light fare includes carry-on and personal item only — no checked bag. A pre-purchased checked bag runs from €65 for up to 23 kg. The carry-on limit is 10 kg total across both items. Buying baggage at the airport costs significantly more than buying it during booking.

Level Airlines is an IAG-operated budget carrier that connects several US gateways — including New York JFK, Miami, and Boston — to European destinations. The baggage rules follow a low-cost model: carry-on is included on every fare, but checked bags are an add-on that costs significantly more when purchased at the airport than when booked in advance.

If you are booking Level from the US, the cheapest path is to add checked baggage at the time of booking. Every step later in the process costs more.

Policy details on this page come from Level’s official baggage information page, verified September 2026. Confirm current pricing at flylevel.com before booking.

Note on US routes: Level has adjusted its US gateway schedule in 2026 — LAX and SFO service has been suspended or reduced. Active routes from the US include New York JFK and Miami (MIA) to Barcelona. Verify current routes on flylevel.com before purchasing any tickets.

Carry-On Baggage

Every Level fare includes one carry-on and one personal item. Both count against a combined 10 kg weight limit on Economy Light, Smart, and Flex fares. Excellence fares allow 14 kg combined.

ItemMaximum dimensionsWeight limit
Carry-on bag56 x 40 x 25 cm (22 x 15.7 x 9.8 in)Combined 10 kg (all items)
Personal item40 x 30 x 15 cm (15.7 x 11.8 x 5.9 in)Included in combined limit

The combined 10 kg limit is the detail most passengers miss. Unlike many US carriers, Level does not allow heavy carry-ons as long as they fit in the bin. Total weight across both carry-on items must stay at or under 10 kg.

If your carry-on exceeds the size or weight limits, the charge is €50 per bag, applied at the gate.

Checked Baggage by Fare

Level uses a tiered fare structure. The bottom fare (Economy Light) includes no checked bag at all. Higher fares include one or two bags in the ticket price.

Fare classChecked bags includedWeight per bag
Economy LightNone—
Economy Comfort1 bag23 kg
Economy Extra2 bags23 kg each
Premium Comfort1 bag23 kg
Premium Extra2 bags23 kg each

If you are on Economy Light and need to check a bag, you must purchase it separately. The earlier you buy, the cheaper it is.

Pre-Purchased Checked Bag Fees

These prices apply when you add a bag during booking or before check-in closes. Airport and gate prices are significantly higher.

Bag weight limitPre-purchase price (from)
Up to 15 kg€57
Up to 23 kg€65
Up to 32 kg€95

An additional checked bag (beyond what the fare includes or the first pre-purchased bag) costs €70.

Excess weight above 23 kg is charged at €12 per kilogram at the airport. The 32 kg pre-purchase option is cheaper than showing up with a 27 kg bag and paying the per-kilo overage rate.

Currency Note for US Travelers

Level charges baggage fees in euros. At current exchange rates, €65 converts to approximately $70–$75, and €95 converts to approximately $100–$105. The exact dollar amount depends on the exchange rate at time of purchase and your card’s foreign transaction fees.

Use a credit card with no foreign transaction fees when booking baggage on Level. If you have a card that charges 2–3% on foreign currency purchases, add that to the baggage total when calculating your true cost.

Special Items

Level charges flat fees for oversize or sports equipment:

ItemFee
Bicycle€150
Golf equipment€130
Ski/snowboard equipment€130
Diving equipment€130
Musical instruments (hold)€130

Children’s strollers and car seats travel free of charge.

What Happens at the Gate

If your carry-on is overweight or oversized at the gate, Level charges €50 per item. This fee applies even if you have purchased a checked bag separately — an overweight carry-on is not redirected to your checked allowance. It is simply charged as a gate penalty.

The simplest way to avoid this: weigh both carry-on items together before leaving for the airport. If the combined weight is close to 10 kg, remove something or put it in a checked bag purchased in advance.

Comparing Level to Other Budget Transatlantic Carriers

Level’s carry-on allowance (10 kg combined) is more restrictive than US domestic carriers. For comparison:

  • Southwest (US domestic): 2 carry-ons, no weight limit
  • Delta Main Cabin (US domestic): 1 carry-on, no weight limit
  • PLAY Airlines (Reykjavik hub): similar tier structure
  • Level Economy Light: 10 kg combined, two items max

If you are used to US domestic carry-on rules, Level’s 10 kg combined limit will catch you off guard. A full-size 22-inch carry-on suitcase alone can weigh 7–8 kg empty. Factor in the bag’s weight when packing.

FAQ: Level Airlines Baggage

Does Level Airlines charge for carry-on bags?

No. Level includes one carry-on bag and one personal item on every fare, including Economy Light. The carry-on must be within 56 x 40 x 25 cm and the combined weight of both items cannot exceed 10 kg. Bags that exceed the limits face a €50 charge at the gate.

What is the cheapest way to add a checked bag on Level?

Add the bag at the time of booking. Level’s pre-purchase rate starts at €65 for a 23 kg bag. Buying at the airport costs significantly more. If you are deciding between fares, compare the Economy Light + pre-purchased bag total against the Economy Comfort fare price — Comfort includes one bag and may be cheaper than Light plus a separate bag purchase.

Can I pay for Level Airlines baggage in US dollars?

Level’s site and fees are denominated in euros. Your credit card will convert at the current exchange rate. Use a card with no foreign transaction fee to avoid a 2–3% surcharge on the baggage purchase.

What if my bag is overweight on Level?

Bags above 23 kg are charged €12 per kilogram at the airport. Bags above 32 kg are not accepted. If you anticipate checking a heavy bag, the pre-purchase 32 kg option at €95 is almost always cheaper than the per-kilo airport overage rate.

Is Level Airlines still flying from the US in 2026?

As of September 2026, Level operates from New York JFK and Miami to Barcelona. Routes from Los Angeles (LAX) have been suspended for the winter season, and San Francisco (SFO) service is paused. Verify current schedules at flylevel.com before purchasing.
