Can You Bring a Razor on a Plane? TSA Rules by Razor Type

12 MIN

The answer

Pack a disposable, cartridge, or electric razor in your carry-on. Take the blade out of a safety razor and put the blades in your checked bag, and check a straight razor, wrapped, if you bring one at all.

Yes, you can bring a razor on a plane, but the type of razor decides which bag it goes in. TSA allows disposable razors and electric razors in both carry-on and checked bags. Loose razor blades, including the blades for a safety razor, are not allowed in your carry-on and have to go in a checked bag.

The rules below come from TSA’s “What Can I Bring?” item pages, which I read on November 1, 2026. This guide covers US airport screening. Other countries set their own rules.

Can you bring a razor on a plane? Short answers by type

Razor or itemCarry-onChecked bag
Disposable razorYesYes, sheathed or wrapped
Cartridge razor and cartridge refillsYes (blades sit in a cartridge)Yes, sheathed or wrapped
Electric razor or shaverYesYes
Safety razor handle, blade removedYesYes
Safety razor blades and other loose razor bladesNoYes, sheathed or wrapped
Straight razorNo (open blade, not in a cartridge)Yes, sheathed or wrapped
Aerosol shaving creamUp to 3.4 oz (100 ml)Yes, within FAA toiletry limits
Box cutter or utility bladeNoYes, sheathed or wrapped

The disposable, electric, safety razor, blade, shaving cream, and box cutter rows each come straight from a TSA item page. TSA has no separate page for cartridge refills or straight razors, so those two rows apply TSA’s blade rule, explained below.

Disposable and cartridge razors

TSA’s disposable razor page says Yes for carry-on bags and Yes for checked bags. For checked bags it adds that “any sharp objects in checked bags should be sheathed or securely wrapped to prevent injury to baggage handlers and inspectors.”

Cartridge razors, the kind with a reusable handle and snap-on heads, have no page of their own. TSA’s razor-type blades page bans “razor blades not in a cartridge” from carry-ons. A cartridge blade sits in a cartridge, so that ban does not reach it.

Keep spare cartridges in their packaging so the officer can see what they are.

Safety razors fly only without the blade

A safety razor takes a single double edge blade that you can remove. TSA’s safety razor page, last updated June 22, 2023, lists a safety razor with blades as No for carry-on and Yes for checked bags. It says the razor “is allowed through the screening checkpoint without the blade.”

Two details trip people up:

  • Take the blade out before you reach the checkpoint. TSA says “the blade must be removed prior to entering the screening checkpoint.”
  • Officers will not do it for you. TSA states that “TSA officers are not authorized to remove the blades from the holder.” If the blade is still in, you lose the razor or go back to check it.

The spare blades go in your checked bag, wrapped or in their dispenser. If you only travel with a carry-on, buy blades at your destination or bring a disposable razor for the trip.

Straight razors

TSA does not have a dedicated straight razor page. A straight razor has an open blade that is not in a cartridge, which is exactly what the razor-type blades page keeps out of carry-on bags. So the safe call is to pack a straight razor in a checked bag, closed and wrapped, per TSA’s sheathing instruction for sharp objects.

If you will not check a bag, leave the straight razor at home.

Electric razors and shavers

TSA’s electric razors page, updated July 14, 2026, lists Yes for carry-on and Yes for checked bags. For questions about regulations it points travelers to the FAA website. Many rechargeable shavers run on lithium batteries, and the general carry-on rules for lithium devices are covered in the portable charger guide.

Shaving cream and the rest of your kit

Your razor may be fine while the rest of your shaving kit is not. A few items from the same bag have their own TSA pages:

  • Aerosol shaving cream. TSA’s shaving cream page allows it in carry-on bags only in containers of 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less. In checked bags, the FAA caps toiletry aerosols at 2 kg (70 ounces) or 2 L (68 fluid ounces) per person in total, with no single container over 0.5 kg (18 ounces) or 500 ml (17 fluid ounces). The nozzle must be protected by a cap or other means so it cannot spray by accident.
  • Gels and liquids. Non-aerosol shaving gel and aftershave count as liquids, so the 3-1-1 liquids rule applies in your carry-on.
  • Scissors. TSA’s scissors page allows them in carry-on bags only if the blades are “less than 4 inches from the pivot point.”
  • Box cutters. TSA’s box cutters page says they go in checked bags “with or without blades.”

Going through security

Every TSA item page ends with the same line: “The final decision rests with the TSA officer on whether an item is allowed through the checkpoint.” A razor that fits the rules can still be pulled for a closer look, so pack to make that look quick:

  1. Put a disposable, cartridge, or electric razor in your carry-on.
  2. Remove the safety razor blade at home, and put the blades in your checked bag.
  3. Pack straight razors and loose blades in a checked bag, sheathed or wrapped.
  4. Keep shaving cream at 3.4 oz or less if it rides in your carry-on.

The razor also has to fit inside a bag that meets the carry-on size limit. Smokers packing the same toiletry bag should check the separate lighter rules.

Frequently asked questions

Can you bring a razor on a plane in your carry-on? Yes, if it is a disposable, cartridge, or electric razor. Safety razor blades and other loose razor blades are not allowed in carry-on bags.

Will TSA stop you for a shaving razor? Not for a disposable or electric razor, which TSA allows in carry-on bags. TSA will stop a safety razor that still has its blade in, and the officer has the final say on any item.

Can I bring a Gillette razor on a plane? A Gillette disposable or cartridge razor fits TSA’s rules for carry-on bags. A vintage double edge safety razor, of any brand, can fly in your carry-on only with the blade removed.

Can you bring a razor in a checked bag? Yes. TSA allows disposable razors, electric razors, safety razors with blades, and loose razor blades in checked bags. Sheath or wrap anything sharp.

What type of razor is TSA approved? TSA does not approve razor brands. Its item pages allow disposable and electric razors in carry-on bags, and a safety razor handle with the blade removed.

Can you bring shaving cream on a plane? Yes. Aerosol shaving cream is allowed in carry-on bags in containers of 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less, and in checked bags within the FAA’s toiletry aerosol limits.
