Aeromexico Checked Bag Fee in 2026: Rates by Route, Fare Tier, and How to Pay Less
The answer
On flights between Mexico and the US, no Aeromexico economy fare includes a checked bag — expect about $30 for the first bag and $55 for the second when added online, per current third-party fee trackers. Longer international routes flip the script: Classic and Flex fares there usually include a bag. The carry-on allowance is the real trap — your carry-on and personal item together must stay around 10 kg (22 lbs), one of the strictest combined limits of any airline flying to the US.
Aeromexico prices checked bags the way most Latin American carriers now do: by route distance, fare tier, and — on domestic Mexican flights — by season. A first checked bag between Mexico and the United States runs about $30 each way added online, while the same bag to Europe costs $60–$65, and on a domestic hop inside Mexico it is quoted in pesos and jumps in high season. There is no single Aeromexico bag fee, but there is a structure, and once you see it the right number for your trip is easy to find.
One honesty note before the tables. We normally pull fees directly from the airline’s own baggage pages, but Aeromexico’s checked baggage page was returning a site error on every attempt when this guide was researched in early October 2026. The figures below are drawn from two current third-party fee trackers — Upgraded Points’ Aeromexico fee guide (updated June 2026) and CarrySizer’s Aeromexico checked baggage guide (updated September 30, 2026) — and cross-checked against each other. Where they disagree, we say so. The final word on any Aeromexico fee is the baggage screen in your own booking, and we flag below exactly when to check it.
How Aeromexico fares and bags fit together
Aeromexico’s current fare families are Main (sold as Basic, Classic, and Flex), AM Plus (an extra-legroom economy, also tiered), and Premier (business class, with its own Basic, Classic, and Flex levels). What each one includes in the hold depends heavily on where you are flying:
| Route | Main Basic | Main Classic / Flex | AM Plus | Premier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Domestic Mexico | No bag | Bag included on AM Plus Classic/Flex only; Main fares pay | Classic/Flex: 1 bag | 1–2 bags at 32 kg |
| Mexico ↔ US | No bag | No bag — all economy fares pay | No bag | 2 bags at 32 kg (Classic/Flex) |
| Mexico ↔ Canada, Central America, Caribbean | No bag | Varies; AM Plus Classic/Flex includes 1 | Classic/Flex: 1 bag | 2 bags at 32 kg |
| South America, Europe, Asia | No bag | 1 bag included (Classic/Flex) | 1 bag (1–2 to Asia) | 2 bags at 32 kg |
The row that surprises people is the US one. On most airlines, buying up from basic economy to a mid-tier fare buys back a checked bag. On Aeromexico’s US routes it does not: per both fee trackers, no Main or AM Plus fare between Mexico and the United States includes a checked bag. Upgrading from Basic to Classic on a Mexico City–Los Angeles ticket buys you seat selection and flexibility, not luggage. If a checked bag is the thing you care about, price the bag separately rather than assuming a fare bump covers it.
Aeromexico checked bag fees by route
Mexico ↔ United States
| Bag | Fee (per bag, each way) |
|---|---|
| 1st checked bag | ~$30 USD |
| 2nd checked bag | ~$55 USD |
Per Upgraded Points’ June 2026 tables, these US-route fees hold in both low and high season — the seasonal pricing that applies inside Mexico does not apply here. At roughly $30 for a first bag, Aeromexico actually undercuts the big US carriers, most of which now charge $35–$40 for a first bag paid online — see our full checked bag fees comparison across every major airline for how the whole market lines up.
Domestic Mexico
Domestic bags are quoted in pesos and move with the calendar:
| Bag | Low season | High season |
|---|---|---|
| 1st checked bag (Basic fare) | ~$800 MXN | ~$1,100 MXN |
| 2nd checked bag (Basic fare) | ~$1,350 MXN | ~$1,500 MXN |
| 1st checked bag (Classic/AM Plus) | ~$600 MXN | ~$800 MXN |
| 2nd checked bag (Classic/AM Plus) | ~$1,000 MXN | ~$1,100 MXN |
At current exchange rates, that first Basic-fare bag is roughly $40–$60 USD depending on season. High season tracks Mexican holiday periods — mid-December through early January, Semana Santa, and the July–August summer peak — which is precisely when you are most likely to be flying with a full suitcase.
Other international routes
| Route | 1st bag | 2nd bag |
|---|---|---|
| Central America & Caribbean | $40–$45 | $50–$60 |
| South America (Brazil, Argentina, Chile) | $50–$60 | ~$100 |
| Europe | $60–$65 | $100–$110 |
The ranges reflect low- versus high-season pricing. Remember that on these longer routes the fee usually only applies to Basic fares or to extra bags — Classic and Flex tickets to South America, Europe, and Asia include a checked bag in the ticket price.
Weight and size limits — and what going over costs
Here is where our two sources diverge slightly, so treat this as a range. CarrySizer’s September 2026 guide lists Aeromexico’s standard checked bag limit for Main and AM Plus fares as 25 kg (55 lbs) per bag, while Upgraded Points’ tables are built around the more conventional 23 kg (50 lbs). Both agree on the size cap — 158 linear cm (62 linear inches), height plus width plus depth — and both agree Premier passengers get a heavier 32 kg (70 lb) allowance per bag.
The practical read: pack to 23 kg and you are safe under either interpretation. If your bag lands between 23 and 25 kg, what happens at the scale may depend on route — that is one of the cases where it is genuinely worth checking the baggage screen in Manage My Booking, or weighing your options at home first.
Go meaningfully over and the surcharges are not subtle:
| Violation | Fee |
|---|---|
| Overweight (23.1–31.9 kg / ~51–70 lbs) | ~$100 |
| Over 32 kg (70 lbs) | Not accepted as checked baggage |
| Oversize, US/Canada routes | ~$150 |
| Oversize, Europe/Asia routes | ~$250 |
An overweight fee of around $100 is more than three times the cost of the first bag itself on a US route. A $15 luggage scale at home, or simply shifting two pairs of shoes into your carry-on, is the cheapest insurance in air travel.
The carry-on rule that catches US travelers
Aeromexico’s cabin allowance looks generous on paper and is strict in practice. Every fare — including Basic — includes one carry-on bag plus one personal item, with the carry-on capped at 55 x 40 x 25 cm (21.5 x 15.7 x 10 inches). That is close to the US-standard 22 x 14 x 9 carry-on footprint, just shaped slightly differently; most US-market carry-ons fit. If yours is borderline, our carry-on size limit guide has the by-airline numbers.
The catch is weight. Per Upgraded Points, the carry-on and personal item together must stay under about 10 kg (22 lbs) combined — CarrySizer notes some fare-and-route combinations stretch this to 15 kg, but 10 kg is the baseline to plan around. US airlines almost never weigh cabin bags; Aeromexico can and does, particularly on full flights out of Mexico City. A rollaboard packed to US habits can hit 10 kg before you add a laptop bag. If you are gate-checked over the limit on a Basic fare, you are buying a checked bag at whatever the counter quotes that day.
How to pay less for Aeromexico bags
Add bags online, before airport day. Both sources note online pre-purchase pricing at or below counter rates, and prepaying locks the number. Even where airport pricing matches, deciding at the counter removes your ability to compare — or to repack.
Don’t buy up a fare tier for the bag on US routes. Since no economy tier includes a bag between Mexico and the US, upgrade for flexibility or seats if you want them — but price the bag as a separate $30 line item either way.
Fly on a fare that includes the bag on long-haul. To Europe or South America, the gap between Basic and Classic is often less than the first-plus-second bag fees. Run both totals before defaulting to Basic — the same checkout arithmetic that applies to airlines that still include free checked bags.
Watch the season inside Mexico. If your dates straddle a holiday-period boundary on a domestic leg, the identical bag can cost ~40% more. A one-day shift sometimes changes the fee bucket.
Check SkyTeam partner rules on connecting itineraries. Tickets sold with a Delta codeshare or a long-haul SkyTeam connection often carry the most generous allowance in the itinerary for the whole journey — sometimes a free first bag that an Aeromexico-only booking would not include. The allowance printed on your confirmation email wins; read it before paying for anything.
The bottom line
Aeromexico’s checked bag fees are, by current US standards, reasonable: about $30 for a first bag to or from the States is less than any legacy US carrier charges. The structure, not the sticker price, is what costs people money — no US-route economy fare includes a bag, domestic Mexican fees swing by season, the overweight surcharge is punishing at around $100, and the ~10 kg combined cabin weight limit is tighter than anything US fliers are used to. Weigh everything at home, add bags online, and treat your booking’s own baggage screen — not any chart, including this one — as the final price.
